BEIJING, China – The Philippine Embassy showcased an array of colorful Filipino fabrics – from piña to inabel, from T’nalak to ikat – during a trade promotions fair in Beijing.

The Philippine booth also featured other Filipino products at the Southeast Asia New Year Market in Beijing which opened on January 17.

Piña is a fabric woven from the fine fibers of a pineapple plant leaf. Inabel is a weaving tradition of the Ilocano people, while T’nalak and Ikat is a weaving tradition of the Tboli people.

Philippine Ambassador Jaime FlorCruz said the Embassy aimed to promote Filipino textiles to the Chinese public.

“We hope our intricate and colorful weaves will excite the sights of our Chinese friends. Through this, we hope to offer them a chance to experience the Philippines,” he said.

The Ambassador said the Embassy also wanted to showcase Filipino products such as fruits from Dole and snacks from Oishi and W.L. Foods, among others.

The Embassy was supported by the Department of Tourism in Beijing, the Office of PH Agriculture Counsellor, and the PH Trade and Investment Counsellor.

Organizer Tao Lei said this year’s New Year Market in Beijing focused on Asean countries. Iterations of the fair coincide with major holidays and festivities.
