Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain, died at a San Francisco hospital last week due to a respiratory condition; idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). He was 73. The percussionist was laid to rest at the Fernwood cemetery in San Francisco.
Annual musical event Bansuri Utsav will honour Zakir Hussain in its16th edition, which is scheduled next month, the organisers announced on Thursday, December 26, reported PTI.
Bansuri Utsav, which is organised by flautist Vivek Sonar's Gurukul Pratishthan, will be held on January 4 and 5 at Dr Kashinath Ghanekar Auditorium, Thane, Mumbai.
However, the Harmanpreet Singh-led side won't have Amit Rohidas at their helm, as he picked up a red card in the quarter-final against Great Britain.
Sonar, in a statement, said, "As the world is in dire shock of the passing of globally acclaimed Ustad Zakir Hussain, we are dedicating this year's Bansuri Utsav in the memory of beloved Zakir bhai. He was India's cultural ambassador to the world.''
"His exit has created a vacuum in the Indian classical music arena. Going ahead with his teaching of 'The show must go on', we are presenting the festival in his fond memories," he added.
Zakir Hussain’s Jugalbandi with CinemaThe first day of the musical event will feature a jugalbandi by sitarist Ravi Chary and Sonar, and Pandit Anindo Chatterjee will play the tabla. It will be followed by a Kathak performance by renowned artist and actor Sharvari Gamenis.
gwd slotDay one will be concluded with a recital by flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Tabla artist Pandit Satyajeet Talwalkar will join Chaurasia for the presentation.
The second day will have Bansuri Utsav flute symphony, and Sonar and Atul Raninga will lead around 90 flute players. Music composer and Padma Vibhushan recipient Ilaiyaraja will be honoured with the Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia Award.
The Bansuri Utsav will end with a classical singing performance by Begum Parveen Sultana. Pandit Mukundraj Dev will be on the tabla.hot646
